Cataloochee Valley Elk

Updated: Sep 6, 2018

Beautiful drive through Cataloochee Valley near Maggie Valley, NC.

Definitely worth the winding drive over the mountain

The Cataloochee Valley is a beautiful day trip with many pull-offs along Cataloochee Creek and the open fields that the majestic elk now call home. Once common in this area the elk were wiped out due to over hunting. They were reintroduced to the valley in 2001 and now there are a couple hundred in the area and are migrating into other parts of the Smokey Mountains as their population continues to grow.

We took the opportunity to collect a couple frozen treats from a beautiful cascade of icicles along our route.

One curious young buck was checking vehicles out as they slowly crept by.

The Caldwell Place home is a beautiful example of some of the historic sites along the Cataloochee valley.

About Us

We are Seth & Laura and this is our story of why we decided to rewrite our life as we travel with our 2 little girls. We aren’t entirely sure where the story is going, but we do know it is an adventure tale filled with campfires, moonlit nights, animal encounters of all shapes and sizes, and lots of fun. Perhaps our story will inspire you to tear up your life’s manuscript and live out some of your own dreams, but at a minimum, if you have found this site, we hope it brings a little joy to your day.
